Chromebook Care Guide for Parents

Your Child's Chromebook

Helping Your Child Protect Their School Technology

Hallettsville ISD provides technology to support student learning, collaboration, and academic success. With your help, students can develop responsible technology habits, protect their school-issued devices, and keep their Chromebooks ready for learning.

This guide provides practical tips for caring for your child's Chromebook at school and at home.

  • A Chromebook is an important learning tool and should be treated with care.

    • Use it carefully. Carry the Chromebook with two hands when possible, and avoid dropping, throwing, or roughly handling it.

    • Keep food and drinks away. Spills and crumbs can damage the keyboard and other components.

    • Protect the screen. Avoid pressing hard on the screen, placing heavy objects on the Chromebook, or closing it with objects between the keyboard and screen.

    • Keep it in a safe location. Avoid leaving the device unattended in public areas or where it could be damaged, lost, or stolen.

    • Protect it from extreme temperatures. Do not leave the Chromebook in a hot vehicle or other environments that could damage the device.

    • Keep it clean. Use a soft, dry cloth when appropriate. Do not spray cleaners directly onto the device.

  • A charged Chromebook helps students stay prepared for classroom activities.

    • Charge the Chromebook regularly, preferably overnight when needed.

    • Make sure the charger is connected securely.

    • Bring the Chromebook to school charged and ready for learning.

    • Keep the charger in a safe place and avoid pulling or twisting the cord.

    • Do not use a charger or cable that appears damaged.

    • Contact the school if the Chromebook will not charge or the battery does not hold a charge.

  • Chromebooks may be used at home for school-related assignments and learning activities when permitted by the district and the student's teachers.

    Parents can help by:

    • Establishing a consistent place for schoolwork.

    • Encouraging students to complete assignments before using the device for other permitted activities.

    • Helping students maintain a healthy balance between screen time, physical activity, sleep, and other responsibilities.

    • Making sure the Chromebook is stored safely when not in use.

    • Helping students connect to a reliable home internet connection when available.

Please remember: HISD's school technology is intended to support education. Students should follow district technology policies, teacher directions, and applicable expectations for appropriate use.

  • Technology safety is a shared responsibility between the school, students, and families.

    Please remind your child to:

    • Never share their school password with friends or other students.

    • Keep personal information private.

    • Avoid clicking suspicious links or opening unexpected attachments.

    • Use school accounts only for school-related and district-approved purposes.

    • Treat others respectfully when communicating online.

    • Follow teacher instructions regarding websites, applications, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

    • Tell a trusted adult if something online seems suspicious, uncomfortable, or inappropriate.

Important: Students should never use their HISD school email address or account to register for unrelated websites, games, apps, newsletters, or other services that are not school-related.

  • Before requesting help, students may try these basic steps when appropriate:

    • Restart the Chromebook.

    • Check the Wi-Fi connection.

    • Make sure the device has sufficient battery power.

    • Close unnecessary tabs and applications.

    • Check whether an application or website is experiencing a problem.

If the problem continues, contact the student's teacher or campus for assistance.

Do not attempt to repair the Chromebook, remove district management, reset the device, or bypass security settings.

If the Chromebook Is Damaged, Lost, or Stolen

Please notify the school as soon as possible. Prompt reporting helps the district determine the appropriate next steps and protect the device and any information associated with it.

If the device is lost or stolen, provide the school with any relevant details that may help identify or locate it.

  • A few simple habits can make a big difference:

    • Ask your child to show you how they use the Chromebook for school.

    • Check in regularly about assignments and online experiences.

    • Encourage responsible use and proper device care.

    • Remind your child to report problems rather than hide damage or security concerns.

    • Contact the school when you have questions about device expectations, acceptable use, or troubleshooting.

Our goal is to help students become responsible digital citizens while ensuring that school technology remains available for learning.

  • Need Help?

If your child's Chromebook is not working properly, please begin by contacting the student's teacher or campus office.

Thank you for partnering with Hallettsville ISD to help keep student technology safe, secure, and ready for learning!
